FAQ about Curtin University Sarawak (especially for MARA scholars)

Thursday, 20 June 2013 @ 08:00 | 0 Comment [s]

Some people I don't really know asked me about Curtin University because they will be coming to Curtin in the next few months. I am glad to welcome them to Miri. I am not selfish for not helping everyone who asked me question in phone and Facebook but sometime I don't have time. I will need to sit on a chair doing nothing to answer to the questions because the questions need long description. So, I asked them to read this!

1. How do I reach Curtin?

If you are from Peninsular Malaysia a.k.a West Malaysia, you will need to go to Curtin University by flight.I am sure that AirAsia and MalaysiaAirlines provide the service from Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru to Miri Airport. I also believe that other airport will provide this service too.

The flight will take around 2 hours to reach the destination. Once you reach the airport, you can take the taxi to the University. This will only take half an hour. For me, when I first come to Miri, I use my own money first to buy the flight ticket but then I claimed back the fight ticket to MARA by writing a letter to them. I received back the money claimed 4 months after writing the letter.

Note: West Malaysia includes Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

2. Where will I live?

For MARA scholars, when you first come here to further in Foundation Commerce or Foundation Engineering, house will be provided to you. You might be living in  in-campus or off-campus houses which  provided by the University.

There are four types of houses provided by Curtin which are Lakeside (in-campus), Water (off-campus), Villa (off-campus) and Village (off-campus). There will be free bus service provided by Curtin everyday for students to move around from the houses to the campus.

For me, I was placed in Curtin Villa housing and I still stay in the same room. The room is a twin-sharing room and it costs me RM340 per month. When I commence in Degree, I have to pay the rent by myself as MARA will provide higher allowance that time.

3. What should I bring?

For me, I only bring clothes from my hometown with some other things such as documents and notebook. When I did my packing, I refer to a website which helps me to think what I should pack, what I should list down to buy in Miri and what I should not bring.

The rest, I buy them when I reached Miri. However, it is advisable to bring shopping bag when shopping in Miri because Miri is a "no plastic bag everyday" town. Most shops do not provide plastic unless if requested. Some shops will charge 50 cent for plastic bag. I bought a lot of things when I reached Miri. A bought kettle, iron, bed sheet, stationery, foods and toiletries.

How to approach Curtin University when you haven't reach it.

Tuesday, 18 June 2013 @ 08:00 | 0 Comment [s]

Lately, I received some SMS, Facebook Chat and calls from people I don't really know asking about my university, especially from the SPM leavers who have just received offer from MARA and Curtin for August intake. For me, personally after I received the phone call from Curtin, I started to google about Curtin in internet.

I access to this website to get some information and basic view of what I will face in the university. I think I open the website almost everyday before I fly here. Even After several months studying here, I always open this website. For new students, it is advisable to check about the Uni life, housing, facilities and many more in future student page. This page will provide a lot of information for them.

2. Facebook
As I already have friends in Curtin, I always read their statuses and pictures in Facebook. When I read their statuses, I can get some point, how my life will be in Curtin. I could see, they enjoy their life in Curtin hence I am looking forward to see them posting new statuses about what they are and will be doing in campus.

I will also stalk their photos. I can see their photos strolling in the park, at the beach and city. I can also see their pictures in the campus. Hence, I can get some view who are my future friends there. I was trying to avoid culture shock. That's why I prepared a lot.

3. Use your phone
There were some marketing staffs who kept calling me to ask me fill in forms, sending certificates and booking tickets for example. I also did the same. I called them many time. Whenever I have problems or questions to ask, I will give them a call. I also asked my friends a lot.

That's all what I have done before when I don't have any idea what Curtin looks like and what will happen to me when I reach Curtin.

Accounting in Secondary School

Wednesday, 24 April 2013 @ 08:00 | 1 Comment [s]

16.04.2013 Tuesday

On Tuesday, I have a Malaysian Studies class and I felt offended by a student who gave his opinion which made me felt very sad. You know, sometime, there were some misunderstanding between Peninsular of Malaysia and the Sabah Sarawak. I do believe that Malaysia should be united. :)

I went to Accounting lecture and tutorial in the afternoon and straightly went back home after the class because based on the schedule, today is the day I must cook for dinner. I went back home, cook, prepare some iced lemon tea and have some rest.

Footnotes
For the Accounting classes, I do believe that there are a lot of benefits of taking accounting in secondary school because I understand almost everything much easier than other friends who have never studied Accounting before.
So, to my little juniors, who might want to take Accounting or Commerce courses such as Finance, Banking and Entrepreneurship, I advise all of you to take Accounting in school. I do really mean it.

Resume Writing for SPM

Friday, 22 June 2012 @ 08:24 | 0 Comment [s]

I wrote my first resume when I was in form 4. There are some important things to be noted about resume writing.

  1. I usually write resume using format of Arial 12
  2. The less page the better because the person that will need to read the resume will not feel bored.
  3. Email given in resume should be formal because an informal email address shows immature and looks not serious. Example of informal email address - doremon94, lollypopgurlzz,
  4. The references are person that can be contacted to ensure that all information given is true.
  5. should be short, simple but full of useful points.
p/s : I have prepared one template, but the green frog picture should be change with your own picture
