FAQ about Curtin University Sarawak (especially for MARA scholars)

Thursday, 20 June 2013 @ 08:00 | 0 Comment [s]

Some people I don't really know asked me about Curtin University because they will be coming to Curtin in the next few months. I am glad to welcome them to Miri. I am not selfish for not helping everyone who asked me question in phone and Facebook but sometime I don't have time. I will need to sit on a chair doing nothing to answer to the questions because the questions need long description. So, I asked them to read this!

1. How do I reach Curtin?

If you are from Peninsular Malaysia a.k.a West Malaysia, you will need to go to Curtin University by flight.I am sure that AirAsia and MalaysiaAirlines provide the service from Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru to Miri Airport. I also believe that other airport will provide this service too.

The flight will take around 2 hours to reach the destination. Once you reach the airport, you can take the taxi to the University. This will only take half an hour. For me, when I first come to Miri, I use my own money first to buy the flight ticket but then I claimed back the fight ticket to MARA by writing a letter to them. I received back the money claimed 4 months after writing the letter.

Note: West Malaysia includes Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

2. Where will I live?

For MARA scholars, when you first come here to further in Foundation Commerce or Foundation Engineering, house will be provided to you. You might be living in  in-campus or off-campus houses which  provided by the University.

There are four types of houses provided by Curtin which are Lakeside (in-campus), Water (off-campus), Villa (off-campus) and Village (off-campus). There will be free bus service provided by Curtin everyday for students to move around from the houses to the campus.

For me, I was placed in Curtin Villa housing and I still stay in the same room. The room is a twin-sharing room and it costs me RM340 per month. When I commence in Degree, I have to pay the rent by myself as MARA will provide higher allowance that time.

3. What should I bring?

For me, I only bring clothes from my hometown with some other things such as documents and notebook. When I did my packing, I refer to a website which helps me to think what I should pack, what I should list down to buy in Miri and what I should not bring.

The rest, I buy them when I reached Miri. However, it is advisable to bring shopping bag when shopping in Miri because Miri is a "no plastic bag everyday" town. Most shops do not provide plastic unless if requested. Some shops will charge 50 cent for plastic bag. I bought a lot of things when I reached Miri. A bought kettle, iron, bed sheet, stationery, foods and toiletries.
